Short answer (updated November 1, 2026)
There are 13 distinct 120V plug-in heat pump water heaters certified by ENERGY STAR (72 listings across 10 brands, built by 3 manufacturers), from 36 to 82 gallons. They run on a standard 120V outlet, so most replacements avoid a new 240V circuit. The lowest rated energy use is the GE Profile PF40S10FPY01 at 724 kWh/yr, about $131/yr at U.S. average electricity prices (EIA, 12-month avg. through Aug 2026).

Sorted by rated annual electricity use (lowest first). Variants with identical certified performance are grouped. Many brands are made by the same manufacturer, so the same unit can appear under several names.

Est. $/yr uses the U.S. average residential rate (18.04¢/kWh, EIA, 12-month avg. through Aug 2026). Min. air temp is the lowest surrounding air temperature at which the compressor runs (below it, the unit uses its backup element or stops heating, depending on design). 26 listings report an implausible cutoff value in the ENERGY STAR data and are shown as blank.
120V vs 240V: what changes
A 240V heat pump water heater needs a dedicated 30A double-pole circuit, which can cost $300 to $1,100 to add if one is not already there, and sometimes a panel upgrade. A 120V plug-in model uses a standard outlet; some can share an existing circuit and others need a dedicated 15A or 20A circuit, so check the installation manual. The trade-off is recovery speed: 120V models have no large resistance element, so they reheat a full tank more slowly. That is why many 120V models are sold in larger tank sizes and use a mixing valve to stretch stored hot water.
If you are replacing a gas water heater, a 120V model is often the simplest path because the space usually has a standard outlet nearby but no 240V circuit.
