Quietest Heat Pump Water Heaters by Rated dBA

Rated sound levels from ENERGY STAR certification data, and what they mean in a real house.

Short answer (updated November 1, 2026)

Rated sound levels for heat pump water heaters range from 37 to 55 dBA in ENERGY STAR data. The quietest rated model is the SANCO2 GS5-45HPC HP + ECO-43SSAQB at 37 dBA; the quietest all-in-one (integrated) unit is the GE Profile PF40S10FPY01 at 41 dBA. For scale, 40 dBA is a quiet library and 50 dBA is a quiet conversation. Only 159 of 726 certified listings report a sound level, so many popular models are not in this table.

Every model with a rated sound level, quietest first

Split systems place the compressor outdoors, so indoor noise is lower than the rating suggests. Variants with identical certified performance are grouped.

How loud is a heat pump water heater in practice?

The compressor and fan run for several hours a day, mostly after hot water use. A rating in the low 40s is hard to hear through a closed door; a rating near 50 to 55 dBA is noticeable in an adjacent room. Placement matters as much as the rating: a garage, basement, or utility room with a closed door makes most units unobtrusive, while a closet next to a bedroom is where noise complaints come from. Rubber isolation pads and keeping the unit off a shared wall help.

dBA ratings are measured at a set distance under test conditions. They are useful for comparing models, not for predicting exactly what you will hear.
